Future Fabrics: Weaving Textile into Technology

Future Fabrics: Weaving Textiles into Technology initiative was a project by a 14-person global team assembled by the Royal Textile Academy of Bhutan and the JNW Superfablab in collaboration with Fabricademy. Our collaborative efforts concentrated on preserving the rich textile traditions of Bhutan, commencing in Thimphu.

With traditional handlooms, patterns, and motifs at risk of fading into obscurity, our team took a holistic approach, considering both seasoned weavers and the emerging generation. Addressing the challenges faced by the experienced weavers, we devised a backstrap loom attachment to ease back pain during prolonged weaving sessions, fostering a more comfortable and motivating experience. Simultaneously, we introduced the “Happy Loom Kit” to encourage the younger generation to engage in weaving.

To ensure the longevity of Bhutanese textile culture, we digitally archived patterns and the expertise of skilled weavers. Additionally, we documented weaving songs and dances performed by artisans. The project earned recognition by winning the Fab Challenge, securing a $5000 seed fund. Notably, experts from USAID assessed our project and forecasted substantial returns, estimating as high as 800% per dollar invested.
